Carnival of Aalst, Belgium, removed as Masterpiece of Oral Heritage by Unesco.
A Must do photoreportage
The carnival of Alost was recognised as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010, but was removed in 2019 amid controversy over the use of antisemitic stereotypes during the carnival and in its promotional materials, in addition to previous controversies. It was the first time anything was removed from UNESCO's Intangible Heritage of Humanity list.
Sander loves to photograph events like the carnival because they encapsulate a vibrant tapestry of human emotion and cultural expression. The exhilarating energy, the colorful costumes, and the joyous interactions among people create a dynamic atmosphere that is both visually captivating and deeply meaningful. Each moment offers a unique story, allowing Sander to connect with the subjects in a way that transcends the lens, capturing fleeting expressions of happiness, surprise, and community spirit. This rich environment inspires his creativity, providing endless opportunities to document the essence of celebration and connection through his sophisticated photographic style.
